Winter wonderland: Nine ways to wear warm and cosy coats

Did you feel that? Chilly, isn’t it? There’s no getting around it; winter is setting in. So, if you’re still chancing your arm with a light jacket, now would be an excellent time to reconsider your outerwear.

Let's start with the classics. Styles like the pea coat and the duffle remain closet keepers, thanks to their any-weather naval convoy origins. Forget that scratchy old-school Melton cloth, though.

This season’s styles, like those at COS, boast recycled wool fabric blends with updated silhouettes that borrow accents like storm flaps and double-breasted folds from its cousin, the trench.

Speaking of glow-ups, expect the puffer to flaunt a sleeker aesthetic, courtesy of Danish brand Rains.

Built on woven featherless chamber technology, their signature waterproof ‘Alta’ jacket boasts double welded seams, concealed fleece-lined pockets, an insulated drawstring hood, and longer silhouettes to protect against the elements while still looking oh-so-chic.

For equally weather-worthy finds, check out Jack Murphy’s ‘Malvern’ cape-style coat (water and windproof), which also ticks the box for autumn/winter’s popular country vibe.

Word to the wise: although tactile textiles like borg, faux-shearling, and teddy bear naps continue their retail reign, save these beauties for dry days.

If they get wet, allow the garment to dry for up to forty-eight hours and detangle with a wide-tooth comb.

Although a street-style staple, leather isn’t too fond of rain, either.

Try a low-commitment compromise like a wool fringe coat with a detachable matching scarf (Whistles wins big) or opt for a reversible trench that can layer over a quilted Uniqlo vest. Stay cosy!
