Waterproofs

Waterproof clothing uses a membrane or coating together with taped seams to keep out sustained rain. Water-resistant fabrics, such as waxed cotton and wool tweed, repel light rain and damp but will eventually let water through in a prolonged downpour.

Our waterproof fabrics are designed to allow moisture vapour from the body to escape while blocking rain from outside. This keeps the jacket comfortable and breathable during moderately active use rather than trapping heat and humidity inside.

Sewing creates needle holes that water can pass through, even in fully waterproof fabric. Taped seams seal those holes with a bonded strip on the inside of the garment, which is essential for genuine waterproof performance.

Always follow the care label. Waterproof garments generally need a technical cleaner rather than standard detergent, as ordinary washing products can leave residues that affect the water-repellent finish.

The durable water repellent finish on the outer fabric wears down with use and dirt. Cleaning the jacket correctly and reproofing it with a suitable product usually restores the beading without affecting the waterproof membrane underneath.

Short jackets give more freedom of movement and suit active use. Long waterproof coats keep rain off the legs and block wind at the waist, which is more effective for commuting, standing outdoors or exposed conditions.
