Women's Utility Jackets

The utility jacket started life as workwear. It was designed for people who needed deep pockets, tough fabric and no-fuss protection from whatever the day threw at them. That purpose hasn't changed. The jacket just looks better now.

Jack Murphy's utility jackets for women are cut from Halley Stevensons Scottish waxed cotton, a fabric that's been waxed, dyed and finished in Dundee since 1864. It's water-resistant, naturally wind-breaking and softens over time without losing its shape. The kind of cloth that improves the more you wear it.

The centrepiece of our waxed utility jackets for women, the Orla, combines timeless craftsmanship with classic design inspired by RAF heritage, featuring ample pockets and adjustable waist belt. The silhouette is clean and tailored, sitting well over knitwear, jeans or a weekend dress with equal ease.

Designed in Dublin, these are utility jackets for women who move between countryside walks, school runs, market days and evenings out without wanting to change coat every time the setting shifts.

Why Waxed Cotton

Waxed cotton has a particular feel that synthetic fabrics don't replicate. There's weight to it. Not heaviness, but substance. You notice it when you pull the jacket on. The collar sits where it should, the body holds its shape across the shoulders, and the fabric moves with you rather than rustling or catching. Halley Stevensons has been producing waxed cotton from their Baltic Works mill in Dundee for over 160 years. Every stage, from dyeing through to finishing and waxing, happens in-house. The result is a fabric trusted for its durability and weather resistance, and one that develops character with age. A well-worn waxed utility jacket for women doesn't look tired. It looks like yours.

Built Around How You Wear It

Utility jackets for ladies need to do more than keep rain off. They need pockets you can use, a fit that works over layers and a length that doesn't ride up or weigh you down. Our utility jackets feature functional pockets that are deep enough for a phone, keys and gloves without bulging. The fastening belt cinches the waist when you want a more defined silhouette and sits loose when you don't. Fully taped seams protect the stitching from water ingress in sustained rain. Throw it over knitwear and tailored trousers and it shifts register without effort. That crossover between town and country is where waxed utility jackets for women earn their keep.

The Colourways and What They Work With

Olive and tan are classic colours for utility jackets. They pair with earth tones and neutrals, and pick up the greens and browns of an Irish autumn without trying. Black sharpens the silhouette and works harder in urban settings. Worn over a dark knit or charcoal trousers, it feels polished rather than rugged. Softer than black but just as versatile, navy bridges countryside ease with city sophistication, complimenting denim and wool with effortless balance.

What makes a utility jacket different from a standard wax jacket?

A utility jacket usually has a stronger field-jacket feel, with practical pocketing, a more structured front, and details borrowed from outdoor wear. A standard wax jacket can be simpler or cleaner in shape, while a utility style leans more openly into function and storage.

Are utility jackets for women only suited to country wear?

Not at all. They come from country and fieldwear, but they work just as well in towns and cities. The shape pairs easily with denim, knitwear, boots, and simple dresses, which is why women’s utility jackets tend to move so easily between settings.

How should a waxed utility jacket for women fit?

It should leave enough room for a jumper or lighter knit underneath without looking bulky through the shoulders. The best fit feels easy rather than tight, with enough shape through the waist to keep the jacket from looking boxy once fully layered.

Do wax utility jackets feel heavy to wear?

They usually feel more substantial than a lightweight rain jacket, but that is part of their appeal. The fabric has body, the structure is firmer, and the jacket sits with more shape on the frame. It feels protective rather than flimsy.

What can I wear with utility jackets for ladies?

They work especially well with jeans, cords, ankle boots, chunky knitwear, and simple cotton shirts. For a softer contrast, wear one over a dress or skirt with tall boots. The jacket brings enough structure that the rest of the outfit can stay simple.

Do wax jackets change with wear?

Yes, and usually for the better. The surface softens, the creases become more individual, and the jacket starts to look lived in rather than fresh off a rail. That worn-in look is part of why many people come back to wax outerwear again and again.
