Men's Long Coats & Jackets

There is a point in winter where a short jacket stops being enough. Rain runs off the hem onto your legs, wind finds its way under the waist, and you spend the walk wishing you had worn something longer. Jack Murphy's men's long coats and jackets solve that problem, offering coverage that extends past the hip and, in many styles, well below the knee.

The collection covers long waterproof coats for men built for sustained rain, alongside wool coats and tweed coats designed for cold, dry weather. Fabrics are selected from established mills, including high-quality wool tweed from Abraham Moon & Sons in Yorkshire.

Whether you need a long coat for winter commutes, country walks or standing outdoors for hours at a time, extra length brings a real practical advantage. It also gives a cleaner, more formal line over tailoring, which is why longer outerwear has stayed a staple of well-built wardrobes for so long.

Coverage Where It Counts

Length changes how a coat performs. A hem that falls below the knee keeps rain off the tops of your legs, blocks wind at the waist and traps warmth that a cropped jacket lets escape. On exposed ground or a long platform wait, that difference is immediately noticeable.

Our longer styles are cut with movement in mind, using vents, pleats or generous shaping so the

Waterproof or Wool

The right choice depends on the weather you actually face. Long waterproof coats use technical fabrics and taped seams to keep out sustained rainfall while remaining breathable enough for regular wear, making them the practical option for genuinely wet climates.

Wool and tweed take a different approach, offering natural insulation and light water resistance with a smarter finish.

A Smarter Line

Longer coats sit particularly well over tailoring, covering a suit jacket completely and giving a clean vertical line that shorter outerwear cannot match. That makes them useful for formal occasions as well as everyday winter wear.

Colours stay understated through navy, charcoal, olive and brown so the coat works across settings rather than being tied to one. If you prefer something less substantial, our short coats and jackets offer the same construction in a cropped silhouette, and the full men's jackets and coats range sits alongside both.

What counts as a long coat?

Generally, any coat with a hem falling at or below the knee is considered long, compared with hip-length or thigh-length jackets. The precise length varies by style, and individual product pages give measurements for each.

Are long waterproof coats for men good for winter?

Yes. A long waterproof coat protects the legs from driving rain and blocks wind at the waist, making it particularly effective through wet winters. Many styles also have room for layering knitwear underneath for additional warmth.

What is the difference between a long wool coat and a long waterproof coat?

Long wool coats for men offer natural insulation, breathability and light water resistance, with a smarter appearance. Waterproof coats use specialist fabrics and sealed seams to keep out sustained rain, which makes them the better choice in persistently wet conditions.

Can I wear a long coat over a suit?

Yes, and it's one of the situations where longer outerwear works best. A knee-length or longer coat covers a suit jacket completely, protecting it from the weather and giving a cleaner line than a shorter jacket.

Are men's long coats for winter practical for walking?

Our longer styles are cut with vents or shaping so the fabric moves with you rather than restricting your stride. For very active use, a shorter jacket may still be more comfortable.

How should a long coat fit?

The shoulders should sit at your natural shoulder line, with enough room through the body for a jumper or jacket underneath without pulling across the chest. Sleeves should reach the wrist bone, allowing a little extra when layering.
