What Makes a Coat Waterproof

Waterproof performance comes from the fabric and the construction working together. A waterproof membrane or coating stops water passing through the cloth, while taped seams seal the needle holes created during sewing, which are otherwise the first place rain gets in.

Details finish the job. Storm flaps over zips, adjustable cuffs and properly shaped hoods all stop water finding a way around the fabric, which is why two coats using similar cloth can perform very differently in sustained rain.

Breathability Matters as Much as Protection

Keeping rain out is straightforward. Keeping rain out while letting body moisture escape is the harder problem, and it's what determines whether a coat is comfortable after an hour of walking or unpleasantly clammy.

Our waterproof fabrics are chosen to move moisture vapour away from the body while blocking rain from the outside, so the coat stays wearable through active use. For lighter showers where full waterproofing is unnecessary, wax jackets offer breathable water resistance with more character.

Choosing the Right Length

Length is largely a question of where you need coverage. Shorter jackets give freedom of movement and suit active use, while long waterproof coats protect the legs from driving rain and block wind at the waist, which makes a noticeable difference on exposed ground.

Women's options follow the same logic, with long waterproof coats and mid-length styles available alongside shorter jackets. A waterproof hat adds useful protection whichever length you choose.
