Women's Wool Coats

Melton wool has a smooth, dense surface. It is tightly woven and wind-resistant, with a clean finish that suits more streamlined silhouettes. Tweed is heavier and more textured. Both insulate well, but they feel different on the body and suit different styling.

Pilling happens when loose fibres rub together at friction points. A fabric comb or lint shaver removes pills without damaging the surface. Brushing the coat after each wear with a clothes brush also helps keep the weave smooth and reduces build-up over time.

Wool repels light drizzle naturally. For anything heavier, a waterproof jacket is a better choice. If your wool coat does get wet, let it air dry flat or on a broad hanger, away from direct heat, to keep the shape intact.

Wool has a natural spring which makes it a versatile, trans-seasonal fabric that works well across much of the year, including autumn. Lighter wool blends and shorter styles are ideal for fluctuating temperatures. Later in autumn, longer wool coats and slightly heavier weaves offer more coverage while still remaining breathable. Wool coats are less suited to the depths of winter, when more insulating outerwear may be needed for layering, such as a quilted jacket or puffer gilet.

Clean it first, moths are drawn to residue from skin oils and food. Store it in a breathable garment bag, not plastic, with cedar blocks or lavender sachets nearby. Hang it on a broad, shaped hanger to keep the shoulders from dipping. A cool, dark wardrobe works better than an attic or anywhere with temperature swings.
